Bambang Candra, Asia-Pacific commercial vice president of packaging & specialty plastics at Dow, shared insights on the company’s collaborations and initiatives in China during an interview with Shenzhen Daily, highlighting Dow’s dedication to fostering a circular economy and supporting China’s green transformation.

“Dow’s vision is to be the most sustainable materials science company in the world,” Bambang emphasized. He highlighted the company’s dedication to collaborating with China’s leading industries, particularly in the areas of new energy, e-commerce, and packaging. “We believe that China will continue to lead in the global shift towards a low-carbon economy, and we want to be part of that journey,” he added.

According to Bambang, Dow actively participates in the local innovation ecosystem, partnering with Chinese companies like Lovere, a technology-driven recycling company based in Shanghai with operations across China.

Lovere’s smart bins and data-driven approach to collecting and sorting recyclables align with Dow’s vision of a circular economy. Dow utilizes the collected plastic waste from Lovere in the production of post-consumer recycled (PCR) products, contributing to a more sustainable future.

“Lovere is a perfect example of how technology can revolutionize the recycling industry,” stated Bambang. “Their innovative approach ensures efficient collection and sorting of recyclables, enabling us to create high-quality PCR products that can be used in various applications, from packaging to automotive parts.”

Bambang discussed the challenges and opportunities in the packaging industry, particularly in developing mono-material packaging solutions. Dow is collaborating with companies like Zhejiang Hengxi to create packaging that is easier to recycle, reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste. Additionally, Dow is exploring bio-based feedstocks and chemical recycling technologies to further enhance sustainability.

“Packaging plays a crucial role in our daily lives, but we need to find ways to minimize its impact on the environment,” stated Bambang. “Dow is committed to developing innovative packaging solutions that are both functional and sustainable. We are working with our partners to create mono-material packaging that is easier to recycle and reduce the need for multi-layered structures that complicate recycling processes.”

Dow’s commitment to China’s growth is evident through its recent investment in expanding its facility in Zhangjiagang. This expansion aims to meet the growing demand for silicone derivative products and strengthen Dow’s presence in the Chinese market.

“China is a key market for Dow, and we are committed to investing in its future,” said Bambang. “The expansion of our facility in Zhangjiagang is just one example of our commitment to supporting China’s economic growth and development.”

“China continues to grow, no matter what is happening,” Bambang stated, adding that Dow’s optimism about the Chinese market is grounded in its belief that collaboration and innovation are key to achieving a more sustainable future.
